Watches, trackers, IoT controllers: apps and firmware. For products that live not in a browser but on the wrist or on the factory floor.
A device has little memory, a weak processor and a battery that must be spared. The network comes and goes. Ordinary web approaches do not work here: the code has to be compact, and data exchange frugal and resilient to dropped connections.
I write for the limits of the device from day one. For Garmin watches — Monkey C and Connect IQ. For controllers and gateways — Go, exchange over MQTT, a queue on the server side. I measure first: how much memory a screen takes, how much battery a sync costs. Then I build an app that fits those numbers. The companion service — sign-in, sync, control panel — is made in the same project, so the device and the server are designed together.
You get an app in the platform store or firmware with an update mechanism, and a service through which the device syncs and is configured. YaMusic Sync for Garmin is made this way: playlists download to the watch over Wi-Fi and play offline at up to 320 kbps. Over a thousand installs, a 4.2 rating, maintained since July 2026.
